National Cookie Week! - The Gay Gourmet!™

Art by Gerard Conte ©2011 www.gerardconte.com

Swimsuit season is only weeks away (9 to be exact!), but that’s not going to stop the Gay Gourmet!™ from proclaiming the first ever National Cookie Week from Monday, May 2nd to the 8th. Sure there’s a cookie a day and a month, but they’re both in winter when I’ve got plenty of other delicious things to put in my mouth. While I wouldn’t be The Gay Gourmet!™ if I didn’t have a healthy appetite for judgment, I would be delighted if you would join me in what I expect is going to be one of the best "holiday" weeks in the world!

The idea came from a networking lunch I had with a man named Zach who runs an online cookie baking co. called Schmackarys (www.schmackarys.com.) I like to think of myself as a master brainstormer and amidst talking and seeing how we could help each other I came up with this silly idea to have a National Cookie Week. Well after sending feelers out to all my foodie friends/bloggers/twitter followers/etc, I have gotten a response from over 40 people who wanted to know more!

So here we are!! It's National Cookie Week from May 2nd to 8th! Check me out on twitter @thegaygourmet for cookie news and you can also see recipes being posted on nationalcookieweek.tumblr.com! OH, and don't forget to like us on facebook!! Click this Cookie Week link!

"Toasted" Banana Bread - The Gay Gourmet!™

Nothing warms my heart more than a good piece of home made banana bread! Okay, maybe there's a man out there that can warm my heart but until I meet him banana bread it will have to be.

Momma Gladys used to bake a lot when I was just a papoose but, unfortunately thanks to liquor & age, I don't really recall much of that. SO, you aren't gonna get any sappy, fun, stories there but what I will tell you is that I do imagine you making this for your loved one. Maybe even waking up to your man bringing you a cup of coffee on a Sunday morning, this banana bread and the funnies all hot off the presses! A Gay Gourmet can dream can't he?

The Mise en Place!

The Baking!

Couldn't wait to slice into it!!!

It was gone in less than a day!

Sorry there aren't more pictures but it's hard to video and take pictures during the process as well!! I need a staff!!

The Video with a special guest!!! WATCH ON!

The List

* 2 large eggs
* 3/4 cup sugar
* 1 cup smashed ripe bananas (about 3 or small/medium)
* 1/3 cup buttermilk
* 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
* 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
* 1 cup Toasted Coconut
* 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
* 2 teaspoons baking powder
* 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 3 shots (4.5 oz) Captain Morgan Spiced Rum

The How

1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Lightly grease 8 1/2x4 1/2x2 1/2-inch pan; dust with flour.

2. Toast coconut in a dry pan over medium low heat till it just starts to turn brown and becomes fragrant. about 5 mins or so.

3. Remove coconut from pan and let cool.

4. Beat eggs and sugar in large bowl until thick and light using your electric mixer.

5. Mix in smashed bananas, buttermilk, oil, coconut and vanilla.

6. Then sift flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt over mixture and beat until just blended.

7. Transfer batter to prepared pan and bake till the bread is golden brown on top and toothpick/tester comes out clean. Just about an hour.

8. Transfer to a wire rack to let cool. As it cools pour the rum on top and let soak!

9. Once cooled lightly sift some confectioners sugar on top and serve!

ADOBO -It's a Taste Sensation! _ The Gay Gourmet!™

SO the original idea for The Gay Gourmet!™ was a fun variety T.V. show... think Carol Burnett, Judy Garland, Lawrence Welks meet Rachel Ray/Paula Deen. Well slowly but surely I am getting there. The day that that actually happens I will have fun sponsorships that me & my dancing boys will make famous but singing and dancing though jingles!!

This is an example of one for Adobo! Every good hispanic and non hispanic should have a bottle of Adobo in their cupboard! It's like the Old Bay Seasoning of Spanish Food! I love it. I put it on everything and I do mean everything! (Don't you get any ideas!)

You are gonna love this!!

Adobo makes everything taste better, especially when Momma Gladys is involved!
Momma Gladys' Adobo I guess it is...for now!!

Many Thanks to Lori Leshner, Jeff Biering, Michael Bragg, Gabriel Beck, Tony Neidenbach, Sean Quinn, Kristin Donnelly, John Dolan, Curtis Wiley & West Side Dance Project! I couldn't have done it without you!
